Who is behind Lanternby, an independent UK games review site with no adverts, no trackers and no paid placements.
What this is
Lanternby is an independent review site for players in the UK. Every game on our string of lanterns has been played through by us and reviewed in full, with its platforms, what it can cost after you buy it and a sensible place to stop for the night.
Why lanterns
The best evenings with a game have a beginning and an end. A lantern felt like the right symbol: it lights the way into a world, and it burns down. Our session lantern on the home page does exactly that, and the name stuck.
The Lanternkeeper
The narrator on our home page is a character, not a person. The answers you pick there only filter the games we have already reviewed by the kind of evening they suit. Nothing you choose is stored or sent anywhere.
Who writes the reviews
A small group of long-time players who between them cover puzzle games, co-op, family play and accessibility settings. A game is scored only after one of us has played it properly, and co-op games are played with other people.
How the site is paid for
It carries no adverts, affiliate links, sponsored reviews or products. We host no games, run no accounts and take no payments, so no company has a reason to ask us for a better score.
Conflicts of interest
If a reviewer has a personal or professional link to a game, someone else reviews it and the page says so. We do not accept gifts or trips in exchange for coverage.
The pictures
Every cover is an original illustration commissioned for this site in the visual style of its game, from pixel art to painted dunes. None of it is official artwork, a screenshot or a real person.
